How to write Etsy listing titles people can find

5 min read · Published August 11, 2026

Your listing title does two jobs at once. It tells Etsy search what your item is, and it tells a scrolling buyer whether to stop. Most titles fail one of the two, and plenty fail both. Here's the pattern that does both, every time.

The rule: important words first

Etsy titles have a 140 character limit. You don't need to hit it, and cramming every last character usually hurts. What matters is the order. The first few words carry the most weight in search, and they're what a buyer sees before they decide to tap.

So lead with the thing itself. Not the brand, not the occasion, not the story. What is it, and what's the main way someone would search for it?

  • Weak: "Perfect Gift for Her - Cozy Farmhouse Style Coffee Cup"
  • Better: "Ceramic Coffee Mug, Handmade Stoneware Cup, Farmhouse Gift for Her"

The second one starts with the product, says the material, and still keeps the gift angle. Someone searching "ceramic coffee mug" sees a match in the first three words.

Use the words buyers type

The fastest way to find good title words is to pay attention to how people actually shop. When you're at a market or scrolling Etsy yourself, what goes through your head? "Handmade mug"? "Stoneware cup"? "Pottery mug"? Those phrases are gold, because they're how real searches start.

Watch out for words that sound nice but nobody searches: "whimsical", "one-of-a-kind", "must-have". They don't match anything. If a word wouldn't go into a search box, it's decoration, and decoration belongs in the description, not the title.

Fill the rest with useful details

After the core phrase, add the details that help a buyer decide and that people search alongside the product: material, color, size, style, who it's for.

  • "Handmade" and "ceramic" and "stoneware" are searched constantly.
  • Sizes and colors are searchable: "small", "12 oz", "blue".
  • Occasions work as add-ons: "gift for her", "wedding favor".

You have 140 characters, which is roughly 15 to 20 words. Aim for the product, the material, two or three descriptive words, and one occasion or use case. That's a complete title.

Match your title to your first photo

Here's a quiet one: the title and the first photo should agree. If your title says "blue ceramic mug" and the first photo shows a mug next to a stack of blankets, the buyer's eye goes to the blankets and the click dies. The first photo should show the item the title is describing, clearly, alone or nearly alone.

Tip: CopySprout's Listing Titles tool writes three titles at once from your product and materials, each one front-loaded with the words buyers search for and fitted under Etsy's limit. Pick your favorite, or mix and match.

The one thing to avoid

Keyword stuffing. "Mug, coffee mug, ceramic mug, stoneware mug, cup, coffee cup, teacup, mug for coffee" is a list, not a title. Etsy reads it as repetition, buyers read it as spam, and you've burned the whole title on variations of one word. Say the important thing once, well, and spend the rest of the title being useful.
