Etsy SEO for beginners: how Etsy search actually works

6 min read · Published August 11, 2026

"SEO" sounds like something that needs a degree and a spreadsheet. For Etsy, it's simpler than that. Etsy search reads the words you put on your listing, matches them to what a buyer typed, and shows the best matches. That's the whole engine. Once you see it that way, improving it is just a matter of choosing better words.

What Etsy search actually reads

When someone searches "handmade ceramic mug", Etsy looks at your listing and checks the places where you're allowed to describe it:

  • Title. The single most important place for keywords. Etsy reads every word in it.
  • Tags. 13 slots, each up to 20 characters. These are your second shot at matching the search.
  • Attributes and categories. The dropdowns like color, material, and occasion. Etsy uses these to filter and match too.
  • Description. Less weight in search, but buyers read it, so it matters for sales.

Notice what's not on that list: your About page, your shop announcement, your reviews. Nice to have, but they don't move the search needle the way titles and tags do.

Relevance beats guesswork

Etsy's job is to show the buyer something they'll actually buy. So a listing that matches the search words and describes the item honestly will beat one that stuffs in every word under the sun. "Ceramic mug" in your title and tags will outrank "vintage gift aesthetic mug" for someone looking for a plain ceramic mug, because the second title is a guess and the first is a match.

That's the habit to build: use the words buyers use, not the words you hope they'll use. You search the way a shopper would. What would you type if you wanted to buy your own product?

One phrase, two places

The classic Etsy advice still holds: a strong keyword phrase appears in your title and in your tags. You don't need it everywhere, and repeating it five times helps nobody. Once in the title, once in a tag, done.

With 13 tags and a 140 character title, you've got room for roughly 10 to 15 solid phrases per listing. That's the real work of Etsy SEO: coming up with those phrases, honestly describing your item, and covering the different ways people look for it.

Start with one listing

You don't need to redo your whole shop in a weekend. Pick your best listing, the one you'd bet on. Rewrite its title with the words a buyer would search, fix its tags, and give it a week. Check whether it's getting more views. Then do the next listing.

Tip: CopySprout's Listing Titles, Tag Set, and Keyword Expander tools do exactly this: they take your product and turn it into search-ready titles and tags, so you're choosing between good options instead of staring at a blank box.

Etsy SEO is not a race. It's a slow compounding thing, and every listing you fix makes the next one easier, because you start noticing which words your buyers actually use.
