13 Etsy tags, done right: pick phrases buyers actually search
6 min read · Published August 11, 2026
Tags are the closest thing Etsy has to a free billboard. You get 13 of them, they're visible to search, and they cost nothing to change. Most shops use them like a word cloud: every word they can think of, jammed in. That's not how they work. Here's how to spend all 13 well.
The rules, quickly
- 13 tags, up to 20 characters each. That's the hard limit.
- Tags should be phrases, not single words. "Handmade ceramic mug" is a search someone types. "Mug" is a word everyone uses, so it tells Etsy nothing.
- No repeats. "Ceramic mug" and "ceramic" overlap. Each tag should bring a new idea to the table.
Think in phrases, not words
When a buyer types "gift for dog mom", Etsy wants to match that whole phrase. If your tags are "gift", "dog", "mom", you have three tags that each match nothing useful. If one of your tags is "gift for dog mom", you match the whole search with a single tag. That's the entire game: cover the phrases, not the words.
You can't fit every phrase in 20 characters, and you don't need to. Multi-word tags up to the limit are the ones that match real searches.
A useful tag list for a ceramic mug
Here's what 13 tags might look like for a handmade stoneware coffee mug, and why each one earns its slot:
- "handmade coffee mug" - the core search, front and center
- "stoneware mug" - material, a very common search
- "ceramic coffee cup" - the alternate way people say the same thing
- "gift for coffee lover" - a whole buyer group shops this way
- "gift for her" - broad, but a real search
- "personalized mug" - only if you offer personalization
- "small business gift" - shoppers looking to support small shops
- "housewarming gift" - an occasion people search
- "birthday gift for mom" - another occasion
- "farmhouse decor" - a style search, if the mug fits it
- "handmade pottery" - the craft itself gets searched
- "mug for tea" - catches the tea crowd too
- "espresso cup" - only if the size fits, otherwise swap it
Notice the shape: a few core phrases, then occasions, then styles, then the adjacent use case. Each tag reaches a different buyer.
The tag habits that quietly hurt
- One-word tags. "Gift" "mug" "cup" "handmade" are four tags doing one tag's job. You have 13 slots; don't burn them on synonyms.
- Words that don't describe the item. A tag is a promise. "Vintage" on a new mug gets you views from people who leave.
- Copying Etsy's category names. "Mugs and cups" is already the category. A tag that repeats it adds nothing.
- Not checking your own tags. Tags cost nothing to change. If a listing is cold, rewrite its tags before you give up on it.
Treat tags as a living thing
Your best tag list changes with seasons, trends, and what you learn from your own stats. Etsy's search data and your views are the feedback loop. When a listing stops getting found, the tags are the first thing to question, and the cheapest thing to fix.
