How to use Listing Description

3 min read · Published August 11, 2026

The description is where a buyer decides, so this tool builds the whole thing for you: what the item is, what it's made of, the details, and the care instructions. Use it for new listings, and for old ones that read thin.

What you'll fill in

These are the fields the tool asks for, exactly as they appear in the app. Required fields are marked; the rest you can leave blank and CopySprout fills the gaps.

  • ProductRequired

The specific item as shoppers see it — be exact.

    Example: Hand-thrown ceramic mug

  • MaterialsRequired

What it’s made from — Etsy shoppers filter by this.

    Example: stoneware, food safe glaze

  • Dimensions / sizeRequired

Size or weight buyers need before they buy.

    Example: 4in tall, 12oz

  • Care instructionsOptional

How to care for it — optional but builds trust.

    Example: hand wash only

  • Story or occasionRequired

Why or when you made it — one sentence is enough.

Example: made for slow Sunday mornings

  • Who it is forRequired

Who will love or use this — helps the writing speak to them.

    Example: coffee lovers

  • Listing typeOptional

What kind of listing this is — affects wording.

Options: Physical product · Digital download · Made to order · Custom order

  • ToneOptional

How you want it to sound.

Options: Friendly · Professional · Luxury

  • LengthOptional

How long you want the writing.

Options: Short · Medium · Long

How to use it

  1. Open the app and pick Listing Description from the Listings group.
  2. Fill in the product, materials, and dimensions. The story box is your chance to add one line about why or when you made it, and it's worth using: it's what makes the writing sound like you.
  3. Leave the three dropdowns alone if you're not sure. CopySprout picks a sensible default, or you can set the listing type, tone, and length yourself.
  4. Run it. The description comes back in the order buyers read: opening pitch, details, care, then the practical stuff.
  5. Skim it, tweak anything that isn't right, and paste it into your listing.

What you get

A complete description built around your details, with the most important sentences up front. The first lines are the ones Etsy shows in search results, so they carry the product pitch.

Tips

  • The first 160 characters of your description show in Etsy search. Make sure the opening sentence names the product and its material.
  • Run this tool right after Listing Titles for the same product, and the whole listing comes together in a couple of minutes.
